5th Grade Physical Education
The Solar System
Thematic Questions: As a class we will be learning about distance from the sun and how it plays a role on everyday life such as seasons and which fruit/ vegetables you can eat during that time. This will help students to connect fitness and health together.
Activities:
1. Distance from the sun: Having different sizes of sports balls to demonstrate the size and representation of each planet. Teacher will be the “sun” and students will have to do a relay race from each planet. Slit students up into two teams. So there is no winner or loser have students try to beat their own time rather than the other team. Perform at least twice.
2. Rotation around the sun: For this activity the students will need a pedometer and a court set up like a target where the bulls eye is the sun and the numbers are different planet that the students will represent. Having the students line up and walk around the sun for a set time will give them an idea of how the rotation of the planets work. Having the students count how many rotations they made will also help the representation of how far different planets are from each other.
3. This activity is learning that different seasons depend on the rotation and tilt of the earth. Learning which foods can grow in that time is crucial in our agriculture economy. Giving them handouts to fill in while at home or sore and options to visit online apps for foods during that season are available.
4. Another activity with the target can be asteroid tag where there are a few asteroids trying to hit the planets that are rotating the sun. Teacher (sun) will stand in middle and you can not get too close or else you will burn and the asteroids will be "it" and try to get the planets (other students). Once the planets are touched they become more asteroids this will help the students learn what asteroids are and just to have fun and keep active.
Technology: We will be using pedometers to measure how many steps each “planet”(person) will take during a rotation around the sun. We will be recording them to help them relate number of steps to distance when they get in the classroom. As well as apps that can help you determine which foods are in season at the moment.
Rubric Scale: Each student will receive participation skills depending if they choose to participate or not.
NM Standard Cores: 5-8 Benchmark 1: Demonstrate proficiency in combining basic skills for participating in a variety of physical fitness activities: aquatics, dance, outdoor pursuits, individual activities/sports and team activities/sports.
5-8 Benchmark 2: Demonstrate proficiency using basic offensive and defensive strategies while playing a modified version of a learned team and individual sport.
